What the Hokianga Harbour has to offer !

Local knowledge of where to go and what to see is a great advantage if you are on a tight timetable. Did you know that more people signed the Treaty of Waitangi on the shores of the renown Hokianga Harbour at Horeke (NZ second oldest European Settlement) than at the Waitangi Treaty Grounds?

Your hosts,  Sylvia and Tony have extensive knowledge about the area and are happy to advise you on different activities that can be joined in the Hokianga Harbour Area.

The Wairere Boulders
,  a prime tourism attraction and geological oddity in the world,  situated in Northland in the heart of the Hokianga Harbour.

This boulder is the Landmark of the Wairere Boulder Valley,  sitting high up on top of a hill,   threatening to roll down into the valley.  It did not happen ....  yet.   See their Website Wairere Boulder Valley.

Fishing
,  a popular hobby of the friendly locals.  Tony can certainly arrange a fishing trip for the interested visitor.  Here Tony is dancing Cheek to Cheek,  the cheeky fellar has reason for a good smile.  I am sure that fish is happy in Tony's arms.  There will be many meals to be eaten on that Snapper.

The Hokianga Harbour is well sheltered from the heavy seas of the West Coast of New Zealand.  The ideal fishing place indeed.

We can find a lot of snapper of all sizes.

Here Sylvia has found her task in the business.  Who is going to scale them and gut them?  Never mind,  we are so lucky to have such a gift of heaven right on our door step.
Diving
A true treat you can fin here while diving.  Trips can be arranged for the interested visitor.

Okopako

Okopako horse treks are  a unique experience, which follow old logging roads and are a rare chance to get into the thick of Kauri forest on steep terrain. Original coach roads take you from 300 feet to 2000 feet, through unspoilt native forest. From four years of age, you can guarantee a horse to suit you, no matter what your riding experience.

The Sand Dunes across the Harbour are very spectacular. The rugged beauty of the Hokianga Harbour, with its kilometers of  golden  sand hills, were once covered in an ancient kauri forest. It must have given the great seafarer Kupe a sense of serenity and belonging when he sailed through the heads 2000 years ago, making the area the birthplace of NZ. sandhill-s.jpg (12817 bytes)
sandbugy-s.jpg (10249 bytes) A water taxi, services the sandhills hourly during holiday periods. If you do not want to walk,  you might as well use the sand buggy service available for your pleasure.

Try sandboarding, or explore the sandhills and check out the amazing formations created by hundreds of years of West coast winds and weather.

The Mangrove Walk inRawene is very interesting.  It allows you to see the plant and marine live right at its origine,  without disturbing it at all.  Take your time to view its beauty. mangrove-s.jpg (21874 bytes)
Waipua Forrest
from here you are close to the Waipua Forest,  where you can see one of the biggest Kauris still standing in its natural environment.
